Apprenticeship Requirements Applications Directions

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship combines on-the-job and classroom training. This allows you as the apprentice to actually earn while you learn. As an apprentice, you will work year-round for electrical contractors, and attend classroom sessions during the academic year. As you learn by doing, you are paid directly by the contractor with which you are employed by. While progressing through the training, you receive guaranteed promotion and pay raises.

Apprenticeship Training on a Jobsite

What basic requirements must I meet to qualify?

You must be:

at least 17 years of age to apply, 18 years of age to work.

a resident of the IBEW Local 43 Jurisdiction. Please use this link to view a current Jurisdiction Map.

a high school graduate or possess a GED (GED copies required when applicable).

able to show proof of the successful completion of one year of high school algebra

Applicants who have met the above requirements will be interviewed by the JATC. Apprentices will then be selected in order of their final ranking without discrimination.

How do I apply?

Click the link below to apply online.  Please use proper capitalization and punctuation in order to receive mailed items. You must follow the instructions below in order for your application to be processed.  Please note that duplicate applications will delay processing.

APPRENTICESHIP APPLICATION

After you have applied:

You must follow through with the instructions given on this website.  It is not necessary to call the Training Center.

The next thing that you should be sure to do is forward your Official High School Transcript to our office within 30 days of your application.  We are unable to process your application without this document.  To forward the official high school transcript, simply call the high school that you attended and ask the school to forward the transcript to:

Central New York JATC

4566 Waterhouse Road

Clay, NY 13041

If you did not graduate from High School, it is necessary for you to also submit a copy of your GED.  Additionally, college transcripts, DD214 and any applicable certificates can also be sent to this address.

When the pertinent information has been received by the JATC, your application will be processed.  Assuming you meet the minimum qualifications, your application will then be considered for the next available NJATC/AIR Aptitude Test.  Aptitude testing takes place every two (2) to three (3) months.  You will be notified of this by mail.   Testing fee is $20.00, collectible on the day of the test.

With a qualifying score on the aptitude test the JATC Committee will then grant you an oral interview.  All applicants interviewed by the JATC Committee will be placed on a ranking list in order of their interview score.  Your ranking is provisional, as the application process is continuous and directly affected by each applicant as they are added to or removed from the list.  The ranking list determines the order in which new apprentices are called to be indentured into the program.  If selected, a drug screen with a negative result is required.

Apprentices are called to work according to the industry needs.  When contractors need additional help, a request is placed with the Training Director.  When the need is too great for the existing workforce, new apprentices are contacted to come to work.  This does not necessarily coincide with the Academic Year.

An Academic Year is approximately from September through June.  This is when all apprentices are required to attend scheduled classroom training.  Classes are held at 4566 Waterhouse Road in Clay, New York.  Our first (1st), second (2nd) and third (3rd) year apprentices are currently attending classroom training (unpaid) one (1) day per week during the academic year, spending the other four (4) days on job sites earning an hourly wage while learning the trade. Fourth (4th) and fifth (5th) year apprentices are working full time and attending evening classes. All apprentices are expected to work five (5) days per week when day school is not in session. This schedule is subject to change in the future. For a complete and current wage scale, refer to the FAQ page.

4th Year apprentice Brandon Reese works in the lab during classroom training.

Applications are also currently accepted in person on the second (2nd) Wednesday of any calendar month during the hours of:

  • 9 AM - 12 noon, or

The application paperwork will take approximately 30 minutes, and keeping that in mind, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time, arriving before 11:30 AM in the morning or 4:30 PM during the afternoon session.
